♦ Hiện tại đơn (Present Simple) 

Dùng để diễn đạt một hành động mang tính thường xuyên (regular action), theo thói quen (habitual action) hoặc hành động lặp đi lặp lại có tính qui luật.

Vd:
I walk to school every day. 

Khi chia động từ ở thời này, đối với ngôi thứ nhất (I), thứ hai (you) và thứ 3 số nhiều (they) động từ không phải chia, sử dụng động từ nguyên thể không có to như ở ví dụ nêu trên. Đối với ngôi thứ  3 số ít (he, she, it), phải có "s" ở sau động từ và âm đó phải được đọc lên: 

Vd:
He walks. 
She watches TV.

Thường dùng thời hiện tại thường với một số các phó từ chỉ thời gian như today, present day, nowadays,... và với các phó từ chỉ tần suất như: always, sometimes, often, every + thời gian ... 

Simple present thường không dùng để diễn đạt hành động đang xảy ra ở thời điểm hiện tại (now), ngoại trừ với các động từ thể hiện trạng thái (stative verb) như sau:

wish	sound	own

Lưu ý: Các từ trong danh sách trên thường cũng không bao giờ xuất hiện trong thời tiếp diễn (hiện tại tiếp diễn, quá khứ tiếp diễn...).

Một số ví dụ khác về thời hiện tại thường:

They understand the problem now. (stative verb) He always swims in the evening. (habitual action) We want to leave now. (stative verb) The coffee tastes delicious. (stative verb) Your cough sounds bad. (stative verb)

I walk to school every day. (habitual action)

♦ Quá khứ đơn (Past Simple)

Dùng để diễn đạt một hành động đã xảy ra dứt điểm tại một thời gian xác định trong quá khứ (không còn diễn ra hoặc ảnh hưởng tới hiện tại). Thời điểm trong câu được xác định rõ rệt bằng một số các phó từ chỉ thời gian như: yesterday, at that moment, last week, ...

He went to Spain last year.
Bob bought a new bicyle yesterday.
Maria did her homework last night.
Mark washed the dishes after dinner.
We drove to the grocery store this afternoon.
George cooked dinner for his family Saturday night.

1. Tóm tắt lý thuyết thì quá khứ đơn (Simple Past Tense)

1.1. Công thức thì quá khứ đơn

Khẳng định (+)	S + was/ were + …… Trong đó: S = I/ He/ She/ It + was S= We/ You/ They + were Ví dụ: I was at my friend’s house yesterday morning. (Tôi đã ở nhà bạn tôi sáng hôm qua.)	S + V-edVí dụ: We studied English last night. (Tối qua chúng tôi đã học tiếng Anh.)
Phủ định (-)	S + was/were not + …… Trong đó: was not = wasn’t were not = weren’t Ví dụ: We weren’t at home yesterday. (Hôm qua chúng tôi không ở nhà.)	S + did not + V (nguyên thể)Trong thì quá khứ đơn câu phủ định ta mượn trợ động từ “did + not” (viết tắt là “didn’t), động từ theo sau ở dạng nguyên thể.) Ví dụ: He didn’t come to school last week. (Tuần trước cậu ta không đến trường.)
Nghi vấn (?)	Was/Were+ S + V(nguyên thể)? Ví dụ: Was she tired of yesterday? (Cô ấy có bị mệt ngày hôm qua không?) -> Yes, she was. (Có, cô ấy có.) 1.2. Cách sử dụng thì quá khứ đơn

Diễn tả một hành động, sự việc đã diễn ra tại một thời điểm cụ thể, hoặc một khoảng thời gian trong quá khứ và đã kết thúc hoàn toàn ở quá khứ.VD: My sister came home late last night. (Chị gái tôi về nhà muộn đêm qua.)Diễn tả một hành động lặp đi lặp lại trong quá khứ. 

VD: They always enjoyed going to the zoo. (Họ đã luôn luôn thích thú khi đi thăm vườn bách thú.)

Diễn đạt các hành động xảy ra liên tiếp trong quá khứ.

VD: Anna came home, took a nap, then had lunch. (Laura về nhà, ngủ một giấc, rồi ăn trưa.)

Diễn đạt một hành động xen vào một hành động đang diễn ra trong quá khứ.

VD: When Jane was cooking breakfast, the lights suddenly went out. (Khi Jane đang nấu bữa sáng thì đột nhiên đèn tắt.)

Diễn đạt hành động không có thật ở hiện tại trong câu điều kiện loại II.

VD: If you were me, you would do it. (Nếu bạn là tôi, bạn sẽ làm thế.)

Dùng trong câu ước không có thật

I wish I were in America now. (Tôi ước gì bây giờ tôi ở Mỹ)

→ việc “ở Mỹ” là không có thật trong hiện tại.

Dùng trong một số cấu trúc: It’s + (high) time + S + Ved It + is + khoảng thời gian + since + thì quá khứ

Ví dụ: It is high time we started to learn English seriously. (Đã đến lúc chúng ta phải bắt đầu học tiếng Anh nghiêm túc)

Câu hỏi có thể ở hiện tại hoàn thành những câu trả lời ở quá khứ

Ví dụ: 

Nếu người đưa thư thường đến khoảng giữa 9 giờ và 10 giờ, thì từ 9 giờ đến 10 giờ chúng ta sẽ nói:→ Has the postman come yet/this morning?

(Sáng nay người đưa thư đã đến chưa?)

Nhưng sau giai đoạn từ 9 giờ đến 10 giờ thì chúng ta sẽ nói:

→ Did the postman come this morning?

(Sáng nay, người đưa thư đã đến rồi chứ?)

Dùng để miêu tả một sự kiện lịch sử.

Ví dụ:

The Chinese invented printing. (Người Trung Quốc đã phát minh ra máy in)

Khi hành động xảy ra một cách rõ ràng ở một thời điểm nhất định ngay cả khi thời điểm này không được đề cập đến.

Ví dụ: The train was ten minutes late. (Xe lửa đã trễ mươi phút)

1.3. Dấu hiệu nhận biết thì quá khứ đơn

Để nhận ra động từ cần chia ở thì quá khứ đơn, bạn nên chú ý những từ sau có trong câu:
