Why is the Google app not working?

Several reasons could've caused the problem on your device. For the Google app blackout faced by many Android users recently, the problem was caused after updating the Google app to the latest version. Users have to uninstall the updates before the app start functioning well again.

And most times, Google apps not working on Android devices could result from a faulty Android System WebView or Google Play Services update. That is to say, the problem cannot be tied to particular reasons.

Nonetheless, there are many fixes you can try when the Google app is not working on your device. Here are they:

Here’s how to fix the Google app not working

1. Force restart the Google App

To fix Google app not working on your device, you should restart the app first. This requires you to force stop the Google app from your device settings and restart it manually. Here’s how:

  • From your app drawer, locate the Google app.
  • Long-press its icon and tap App info

Alternatively, you can go to Settings > Apps & Notifications > See all apps > Google if you couldn't find "App info" after long-pressing the Google app icon.

  • From there, hit Force Stop to shut down the app.
  • Now, launch the Google app to see if it works properly.

If the problem persists, you should also restart your phone before embarking on the remaining solutions below.

2. Clear the Google app’s cache & data

If restarting the app didn't do the trick, another way to resolve the Google app not working on your device is to reset the app. That involves clearing the app's cache and data.

An error in the data stored by the Google app might have caused the problem. If that’s it, it shouldn’t be a problem. Follow the steps below to erase the cache and data for the Google App.

  • In the same fashion, long-press the Google app icon from your drawer.
  • Tap App info to view the app settings.
  • Tap Storage & cache.
  • Click on Clear data to reset the Google app.
  • Go back once, then tap Force Stop to enforce the changes.

Now launch the Google app and grant necessary permissions to see if it works normally.

3. Update the Google App

While some notable bugs come after updating an app sometimes, the same bugs can be fixed by updating the app again. Now that the Google app is not working on your device, install the latest version to see if it fixes the problem.

  • From your app drawer, launch the Play Store
  • Tap the search bar at the top and look up “Google”
  • Select the official Google app from the result.
  • Tap the Update button to install the latest version of the Google app.

If there’s no “Update” button on the page, that means you’re running the latest version of the Google app. Try the next solution below.

4. Uninstall updates for the Google app

On the flip side, if your Google app stopped working after a recent update, consider uninstalling the update. The latest version might contain some bugs disallowing the app from working properly. The same thing happened recently where many people couldn't access the Lens, Search, and other features tied to the Google App.

While the reason behind the incidence is unknown, many people fixed it by rolling back the Google App update. The same goes here. Follow the steps below to uninstall updates for the Google app.

  • Again, long-press the Google app on your app drawer.
  • Tap App info to view the app settings page.
  • Click on the 3-dot button in the top right corner of the page.
  • Hit Uninstall updates to re-install the factory version of the Google app.

5. Update your device

Also, you might experience frequent app crashing or apps not working if your phone software is out of date. And in the case of Google apps not working on Android, updating your phone could fix the problem in some cases.

System update brings the latest Android Security Patch to keep your device safe, bug fixes to improve your device stability, and other features to keep your phone up and running.

In case you're not sure if you're running the latest software for your device, follow the instructions below to check and install the latest updates.

  • Launch the Settings app on your device.
  • Find and select
  • Open System Update or Software Update.
  • Check for updates. If an update is available, download and install it.

If you use an iPhone, visit the App Store instead to update the Google app.

6. Reset Google Play Services

Why is the Google app not working? Well, it could result from many things, including when the Google Play Services is malfunctioning. In case you're not aware, Google Play Service is essential for all Google apps and services, and many Android apps depends on it to work.
