2023 Honda HR-V specs: Will it have the same engine options as the Honda Civic?

While the 2023 Honda HR-V offers a hybrid version in the European market, in the United States, all models have a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, which generates 158 hp. For efficiency, the HR-V has an estimated gas mileage of up to 28 combined mpg.

The European-spec next-generation Honda HR-V will be powered by the same hybrid powertrain that’s in the Honda Accord and Honda Insight. However, Honda hasn’t said whether or not it will offer a hybrid version of the HR-V in the U.S.

New design for the 2023 Honda HR-V

Honda released holiday card-style wintery stretches of the redesigned 2023 HR-V. Compared to the 2022 HR-V, the front end of the 2023 HR-V is more aggressive and has a more distinctive lower fascia. The grille of the 2023 HR-V features an S-shaped mesh pattern. Also, the hood is lower, and the headlights have a boxier shape.

For the back of the 2023 HR-V, the redesigned crossover slopes down more steeply compared to the 2022 model. Also, the taillights are more curved, while the lower portion of the rear bumper features body-color styling. Additionally, relative to the European-spec version of the next-generation HR-V, the U.S.-spec 2023 HR-V appears to be larger.

The 2023 Honda HR-V has received a complete makeover as the carmaker tries to beat off new and stylish SUVs that have recently joined the market. Honda‘s 2022 HR-V model was practical and enjoyed good fuel economy. Still, competitors such as the Kia Seltos and Hyundai Kona had the upper hand regarding style and performance. Let’s explore the cost of a fully loaded 2023 Honda HR-V and all the features it adds.

An overview of the redesigned HR-V

The redesigned 2023 Honda HR-V looks nothing like the outgoing model, although the carmaker has retained a few good features. It shares the same platform as the Civic, which means it runs on a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated inline 4 engine. The new model is also longer and has more space than the outgoing model, which makes it a good family vehicle.

However, the automaker has removed the celebrated ‘Magic Seat’ technology, the second-row seat that could be flipped to increase cargo space. Other changes include replacing the torsion beam suspension with the new independent rear one, improving its handling and overall ride quality. It also has upgraded infotainment and safety technologies.

Car and Driver states that the EX-L is the highest trim level available for the 2023 Honda HR-V. It runs on 17-inch machined surface or Shark Gray wheels and comes with 215/60R17 96H tires. The vehicle has a tailgate with power door locks, a black grille, and fully galvanized steel panels. Inside, it features a 9.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless connectivity. The top trim also has a wireless charging pad that is not available on the lower trims.

Honda states that the EX-L trim costs $27,450, almost $4,000 above the base trim. You can add other features to make it perform better and protect it from harsh weather. You will spend an extra $1,500 on the drive train if you wish to have the all-wheel drive capability. There is also an all-season protection package, dubbed the All-Season Protection Package II, for about $358.

On the outside, you can improve the appearance by going for the Nordic Forest Pearl paint for $395. If you are outgoing and adventurous, you may also add the Rugged Package for about $1,100. This package includes a grille surround trim, door trim, and fender flares. In the same breath, you can also add a roof rack for easily carrying your items. The fully loaded model with the above features should cost about $32,048.

Which is the best 2023 Honda HR-V trim?

According to MotorTrend, the Honda HR-V Sport trim is the best as it combines excellent features at a reasonable cost. It also has a sporty look, appealing to regular car users. Unlike the top-of-the-range EX-L trim, it does not have many convenience features, such as leather upholstery, a larger infotainment screen, and parking sensors, that come at an exorbitant price and that you can do without.

Honda has made the Sport trim more like the 2022 Civic EX sibling, only that it has more real estate. It has 18-inch black wheels, heated front seats, and a remote start. The front-wheel drivetrain gives it an estimated EPA fuel efficiency of 32 mpg, which is an extra 2 mpg over the all-wheel drive variant that shares the same engine capacity. The interior has a 7.0-inch infotainment screen and black cloth upholstery. It is also the only trim with a chrome exhaust tip, adding some zest to the cool-looking subcompact crossover.

The Sport trim also has heated seats, additional safety features, and driver assistance. Unlike the baseline trim, it has a conveniently-placed six-speaker system and beautiful interior styling. The Sport trim costs about $25,650, about $2,000 more than the base LX trim.
