An institution or program in which terminally ill patients receive palliative care to reduce suffering, family and friends of the dying are helped as well
Two principles for hospice care:
1) each patients autonomy and decisions are respected. Ex pain medication is readily available as needed, not on a strict schedule or at a strict dosage
2) Family members and friends are counseled before the death, taught to provide care, and guided in mourning
Barriers to
entering hospice care
1) hospice patients must be terminally ill, with death anticipated within six months, but such predictions are difficult to make
2) patients and caregivers must accept death. Traditionally entering a hospice meant the end. this is no longer true. many people avoid hospice because they want to keep hope alive
3) Availability varies. In the U.S western states have more hospices than southern states do.
In a hospice care facility a relative or close friend is encouraged (and sometimes required) to stay with the patient.
