What does green tea smell like in perfume?

Elizabeth Arden Green Tea costs about 1/3 to 1/5 of most designer fragrances, has poor longevity, and, granted, would win no awards for “Most Glamourous Bottle”¹. Don’t be discouraged by any of these things, however. An early creation of now renowed perfumer Francis Kurkdjian, this Eau Parfumée was launched in 1999, and is still going strong (complementary line, yearly flankers and all!), probably for the obvious reason: it costs little, and it smells nice.

What does green tea smell like in perfume?

Green Tea smells just like its name. Now, this is no sophisticated macha, pristinely prepared and served, all subtle herbal tones and elegance; try it with such expectations, and you’ll be disappointed.

This has fizzy citrus, cooling mint and sweet rhubarb; fresh spices, whispery jasmine, and a hint of glossy amber… And, of course, tea, right under the spotlight, bright and green, surrounded by the supporting notes that give it interest and dimension. The accord feels cool and dewy, in a semi-natural style that, although not realistic, doesn’t fall into “cleaning product / tooth paste” vibes, either. I’d say the feeling is similar to those of food flavourings – like in ready-made tea?

And that comparison, for me, sums up Green Tea. It is a tall kitchen glass of simple tea, with a squeeze of lemon and a bit of crushed mint leaves, perhaps a bit too generously sweetened, and filled with way too many ice cubes. Casual, straightforward and refreshing.

This is a light eau parfumée, so it feels very transparent. Like a cologne, the composition is pretty much all about the opening and airy heart, and the base/drydown is soft and short-lived.

Notes³: (Top) bergamot, lemon, rhubarb, orange zest, caraway; (Heart) green tea, peppermint, jasmine, carnation, fennel, celery spice; (Base) amber, oakmoss, musk.

Colour Impression: Yellow-tinted Green.

Evokes: A glass of (generously) sweetened iced tea, with a dash of lemon and mint.

Similar to: Versace Versense; Bvlgari Eau Parfumée au thé vert; Guerlain Aqua Allegoria Herba Fresca.

Season & Occasion: Summer, casual, daytime.

Conclusion

Green Tea smells bright, refreshing and cheerful. I find it a tad too sweet, but still likable, and I especially like its touch of mint – which is closer to actual mint leaves (like in lovely Guerlain Aqua Allegoria Herba Fresca) instead of sharp toothpaste or shaving cream (like in other less well-rounded scents). All in all, I find this fragrance reminicent of cold ready-made iced tea, with a “food flavouring” vibe which is simple yet nice to smell.

Is Green Tea as polished and sophisticated as Bvlgari Eau Parfumée au thé vert, or as elegant and serene as its own new “sibling” Elizabeth Arden White Tea? To my nose… not really. Still, it does smell fresh and pleasant, and shows an outstanding level of quality for its price point. Especially for fans of green tea and/or citrusy-herbal fresh notes, Green Tea is well worth checking out!
