Along with its needed effects, a medicine may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention.

Check with your doctor immediately if any of the following side effects occur:

Rare

  1. Agitation
  2. bleeding gums
  3. blood in the urine or stools
  4. bruising
  5. chest tightness
  6. confusion
  7. cough
  8. coughing or vomiting blood
  9. dark urine
  10. darkening of the skin
  11. decreased frequency or amount of urine
  12. difficulty in breathing and swallowing
  13. dizziness
  14. fainting
  15. fast heartbeat
  16. fever with or without chills
  17. general feeling of tiredness or weakness
  18. headache
  19. hives
  20. hoarseness
  21. hostility
  22. increased blood pressure
  23. increased thirst
  24. irritability
  25. light-colored stools
  26. loss of appetite
  27. lower back or side pain
  28. mental depression
  29. nausea
  30. painful or difficult urination
  31. persistent bleeding or oozing from puncture sites, mouth, or nose
  32. puffiness or swelling of the eyelids or around the eyes, face, lips, or tongue
  33. skin itching, rash, or redness
  34. sores, ulcers, or white spots on the lips or in the mouth
  35. stomach pain
  36. swelling of the face, ankles, fingers, hands, or lower legs
  37. unusual bleeding or bruising
  38. unusual drowsiness, dullness, tiredness, weakness, or feeling of sluggishness
  39. vomiting
  40. weight gain
  41. yellow eyes or skin

  1. Bleeding under the skin
  2. blistering, peeling, or loosening of the skin
  3. bloating
  4. bloody, severe, or watery diarrhea
  5. bone pain
  6. chest pain
  7. chills
  8. cold, clammy skin
  9. diarrhea
  10. difficulty with speaking
  11. double vision
  12. dry cough
  13. fast, weak pulse
  14. general feeling of discomfort or illness
  15. inability to move the arms, legs, or facial muscles
  16. inability to speak
  17. increased menstrual flow or vaginal bleeding
  18. joint or muscle pain
  19. lightheadedness
  20. muscle aches
  21. night sweats
  22. nosebleeds
  23. pale skin
  24. paralysis
  25. pinpoint red spots on the skin
  26. prolonged bleeding from cuts
  27. red or black, tarry stools
  28. red or dark brown urine
  29. red skin lesions, often with a purple center
  30. red, irritated eyes
  31. runny nose
  32. shivering
  33. slow speech
  34. sore throat
  35. sores, welts, blisters
  36. sweating
  37. swelling of the fingers, feet, or lower legs
  38. swelling or puffiness of the face
  39. swollen glands
  40. trouble sleeping
  41. unpleasant breath odor
  42. unusual weight loss

Get emergency help immediately if any of the following symptoms of overdose occur:

Symptoms of overdose

  1. Blurred vision
  2. dizziness, faintness, or lightheadedness when getting up suddenly from a lying or sitting position
  3. fast, pounding, or irregular heartbeat or pulse
  4. feeling of fullness in the upper abdomen or stomach
  5. low blood pressure or slow pulse
  6. pain in the upper abdomen or stomach
  7. reddish-orange to reddish-brown color of the urine, stool, saliva, sputum, sweat, and tears
  8. seizures
  9. swelling around the eyes or face
  10. unconsciousness
  11. yellow eyes or skin

Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention. These side effects may go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine. Also, your health care professional may be able to tell you about ways to prevent or reduce some of these side effects. Check with your health care professional if any of the following side effects continue or are bothersome or if you have any questions about them:

Rare

  1. Feeling that others are watching you or controlling your behavior
  2. feeling that others can hear your thoughts
  3. feeling, seeing, or hearing things that are not there
  4. muscle tenderness, wasting, or weakness
  5. severe mood or mental changes
  6. unusual behavior

Incidence not known

  1. Belching
  2. bloated or full feeling
  3. excess air or gas in the stomach or bowels
  4. indigestion
  5. not able to concentrate
  6. pain or discomfort in the chest, upper stomach, or throat
  7. tooth discoloration

Hepatotoxicity and potential liver failure are the most serious potential adverse effects of rifampin use. Patients on this medication must establish baseline liver function tests and be monitored for liver damage.

Is rifampin a high risk medication?

Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects. Rifampin may rarely cause serious liver disease. Though sometimes necessary to completely treat certain infections, combination treatment with other drugs (such as isoniazid, pyrazinamide) may increase this risk.
