What is Remote Desktop Services role?

  • I'm not sure what you are asking here...  Are you trying to setup an RDS Server on a single machine?  If so, there's a 'quick' option when you add the Role that puts everything you need in there for you.

Yes I have a dedicated Windows 2019 server for this project.  We have a very small network.  I need to allow people to remote in from home.

  • Remote into an RDS environment, yes?  They'll be connected to the Server to use things installed on the Server?

Just use the Quick option when installing RDS.  It will install all the needed roles and do most of the configuration for you.

Yes that is exactly what I need with one issue.I have no idea how to use quick option!

When you add the Role in Server Manager it's a choice you can click on.

Here are some pictures that show it:

Well that was easy - now to figure out  how to license it.

  • Also make sure you set up VPN or An RDGateway if you're using external access. Don't just open 3389.

Just a normal Server license is needed for the server itself to run.  I'm guessing you already have Server CALs for your network, so the only additional thing you need is RDS CALs.

Of course, that's just the server.  You'll need to check licensing for each application you want your users to have access to - RDS licensing for many apps is different than normal licensing.

Exactly  the wizard said to use RD License manager but I can't find it.

  • Server Manager, RDS Overview,  Servers.  Right click on your Server and choose RD Licensing

  • DO i want to use per device or per user?

  • Garnock12 wrote:

That's up to you.  Most people purchase User RDS CALs because it's easier to manage and allows the User to access RDS from numerous devices.  But if you have shared terminals and lots of  users, Device RDS CALs may be better. It's very similar to Server CALs in this respect.

Oh duh it says on my license agreement that it's user cals .  So I try to enter the license information and get this

The licensing agreement data provided to Microsoft is not valid. Check all the information you provided, make any necessary corrections, and then resubmit your request. If the problem persists, try using a different connection method.

I tried manually entering the data and copy and paste - WTH?

    My license description is

    WINRMTDSKTPSRVCSCAL 2019 SNGL NL USRCAL

  • Are you putting in the right information?  It's been a while for me, but I seem to recall that you purchase the CAL then have to register it, then get an email from MS with the information that goes into the Licensing Manager.

  • You need to enter in the Authorization Number and the License number from the licensing document Microsoft or your vendor sent you.

According to the example in the wizard I am entering the correct data.  It's on the Microsoft Open License Order Confirmation

That is what I thought I was doing.

Could this be the issue?  Can the server reach the MS activation servers? Maybe a firewall is preventing access?

I'm not sure but this is a good idea.  When I read that I was thinking local windows firewall which isn't enabled but my SonicWALL may be denying it  Let me check with my SonicWALL engineer and report back

  • You may have to call the activation clearinghouse.  If you are doing a copy/paste make sure there isn't a space at the beginning or end of the paste.

That sounds spooky.  Are they the IRS for Microsoft? :)

  • haha, no, just a dedicated line for RDS activation issues - or at least it used to be dedicate to RDS.

OK I will google the number and give it a spin.

  • There should be somewhere in the activation process that gives you the number.

Yeah, get it from those screens.  Who knows where you may end up calling if you just search for it.

  • In Licensing Manager, right-click the server name, chose properties, change "connection method" to telephone.

Your call is very important to us, please hold.

  • LOL I don't even get that!  The music is synthesized like from a video game.  Don't know if any of you have ever played Sim City but this music sounds like it belongs in the game.  This call needed an in-flight movie and alcohol

After 2 hours, 22 minutes and 10 seconds I finally have my licenses installed.  MAN that was painful.  The technician had to do it three times to get it right.

  • What was the issue?

  • She didn't know.  Poor thing probably has issues tying her own shoes.

I had a thought last night.  I may be dating myself but eons ago when you wanted to install an app on a terminal server we had top run a command first to put the server into install mode then install the app then conclude the command.  Is that necessary today?

  • Oh sorry for that last part.  I actually have another thread open for that.
